Lionel Messi and records go together like goals and goalposts. And now, the Argentine legend is just one step away from stealing another record from his old rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Inter Miami’s No. 10 scored a beauty of a free-kick against Porto in their latest Club World Cup match, taking his tournament tally to six.
That puts him just one shy of Ronaldo’s all-time record of seven Club World Cup goals. One more goal and Messi draws level. Two more and he takes the crown. It’s classic Messi vs Ronaldo — round 742.
At 37, Messi is showing no signs of slowing down. He’s already scored 50 goals for Inter Miami and now looks to add one more major milestone to his name.
A Monday night clash against Palmeiras could be his golden chance.

Another Lionel Messi teammate chasing the same record
Cristiano Ronaldo, of course, set the bar high. His Club World Cup goals came across spells with Manchester United and Real Madrid.
The standout? A hat-trick in the 2016 final. But now, his lead is under serious threat.
Messi has been here before. He scored five Club World Cup goals during his Barcelona days, winning the title three times. His sixth goal, with Inter Miami, was a perfect free-kick into the top corner. As if we’d expect anything less.
Speaking to DAZN after the win over Porto, Messi said: “This is a very important victory, and we’ll enjoy it.” He added, “It was a great effort from the whole team... We had a sour taste after the game against Al Ahly.”
Not to be left out, Luis Suarez is also eyeing the record. He has five Club World Cup goals and could yet pull a fast one on both his former teammates. After all, we’ve seen him bite into challenges before.
Inter Miami now sits in a strong spot in the group. All eyes will be on Monday — can Messi finally overtake Ronaldo in yet another stat?
