Liberty star's fearless new look goes viral overnight for very emotional reason

The New York Liberty dropped a tough one at Barclays Center on Thursday, falling 87-70 to the Golden State Valkyries to slip to 3-2 on the season. But the player who became the game's biggest talking point was rocking a bold buzz cut and red lipstick. Her fearless look stopped the internet cold.

The Valkyries took an early 25-15 lead in the first quarter and controlled the rest of the game, limiting the Liberty to 12 points in the third. Breanna Stewart led New York with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Jonquel Jones scored 16 points with eight rebounds.

Satou Sabally also returned to the starting lineup after recovering from a concussion sustained in the previous WNBA Finals. She finished with five points, four rebounds, and two assists in 16 minutes. It was a quiet performance, but her shaved head was more than enough to keep her in the spotlight.

On Instagram, Sabally explained that she shaved her head to raise awareness for alopecia and support her best friend, Sunniva Ferri, who has the same condition. The autoimmune disorder causes patchy hair loss and affects millions of people worldwide.

Sabally, who previously wore her long, curly hair in an updo, paired her new buzz cut with red lipstick on Thursday. Photos of her look quickly went viral, pulling in over 4 million views on X overnight.

"Love the buzz cut on Satou. Looking strong and confident out there," one fan wrote

“She's gorgeous," added another

A third viewer joked, "She got the same barber as Wemby."

One viewer claimed, "She cut her hair because her friend I think has cancer, but the red lipstick man, Satou look crazy as hell right now smh."

Another joked, "I thought this was Magic Johnson's son."

The Liberty will face the Dallas Wings next on Sunday. It tips off at 3:30 p.m. ET at the Barclays Center and will be broadcast live on NBC and Peacock. Sabally is set to play in this game as she is now off the injury report and back in the active rotation.
