LeBron predicted to leave Lakers next offseason to team up with old friends

LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers have had quite the ride these past seven years.

They won a championship in 2020 and brought Luka Dončić in midway through last season, hoping to accomplish the same goal.

A couple of months later, things have backfired. James may want out, and his contract ends in just one more season, allowing him to do so.

If LeBron continues his storied career after the 2025-26 season, one Western Conference team may have a great shot at landing the 40-year-old.

“The (Dallas) Mavericks, by far, have generated the most James buzz this offseason," CBS Sports' Sam Quinn wrote Monday. "If they were to trade for him now, though, it would mean gutting their depth. Dallas would have to give up four or five players just to match (the) money for James. As a free agent, things simplify tremendously.

Without (P.J) Washington on the books, Dallas is looking at around $20 million in projected second-apron room before factoring in its first-round pick. That's more than enough money to sign James to the taxpayer mid-level exception.”

James has played with his fair share of players throughout his soon-to-be 23-year career, but he has some strong ties to the Dallas Mavericks.

He has won a championship with Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving on separate occasions and has suited up with D’Angelo Russell. As we all know, it’s typically easier to play with teammates with whom you already have chemistry with.

What the Mavericks have going for them right now could be special. First-overall pick Cooper Flagg, established veterans, and plenty of depth.

When the time comes, they will have to decide between continuing in that direction or making sacrifices to try to bring James in.
