LeBron James passes legend Kobe Bryant in Lakers history following dominant performance vs. Hawks

The Los Angeles Lakers are led by LeBron James and Luka Doncic, and there’s no denying it after Tuesday night’s performance. The Lakers desperately needed a win, and the duo delivered. For James, he just wants to be a part of a legitimate contender.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Rich Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”

When it was announced that James would play on the back end of a back-to-back, it came as a surprise. However, the veteran recognized that the game against the Atlanta Hawks was a must-win. A few hours before tipoff, it was officially announced that James would suit up.

“LeBron James is available tonight vs. ATL, per the Lakers. This will be the first time this season he has played both ends of a back-to-back,” ESPN reporter Dave McMenamin wrote.

Despite almost sitting out, James delivered a 30-point double-double that was nearly a triple-double. With this performance, he passed Laker great Kobe Bryant in a franchise category.

“Lakers say LeBron James had his 61st 30-point double-double since joining the Lakers, moving him past Kobe Bryant for 7th-most double-doubles in franchise history,” The Athletic’s Dan Wolke posted.

James has given everything to the Lakers organization, and now the question remains whether he will decide to retire. On Tuesday night, he honored his legacy further by surpassing his late friend in another Lakers milestone.

This accomplishment is another testament to James’ greatness and provides a benchmark for where he stands among the franchise’s all-time best. He will look to continue playing at a high level and help get the Lakers rolling again.
