It didn't take Tien too long to announce his arrival this year, advancing to the fourth round of the Australian Open as a qualifier. He even knocked out fifth seed Daniil Medvedev along the way. He then ousted World No. 2 Alexander Zverev en route to the quarterfinals of the Mexican Open a few weeks later.
Tien endured a period of underwhelming results after that. He eventually raised his level in the second half of the season. He reached the fourth round of the Canadian Open and the Shanghai Masters. He also finished as the runner-up at the China Open in between, and captured his maiden career title at the Moselle Open in November. He finished the season ranked No. 28.
Jodar made massive improvements this season, and bettered his ranking from No. 911 at the start of the season to a career high of No. 166. He was able to achieve this thanks to three titles on the Challenger circuit. He will now make his debut at the Next Gen ATP Finals.

Learner Tien vs Rafael Jodar prediction
Rafael Jodar at the Davis Cup Finals 2024. (Photo: Getty)Tien was the runner-up at last year's Next Gen ATP Finals. He's the most accomplished player in this year's line-up, and the only one within the top 100. He's the clear favorite to win the title. He has a 32-23 record this season. Jodar has competed exclusively on the Challenger circuit this year, putting together a 37-12 record.
Both players have arrived at the Next Gen ATP Finals having won their previous tournament. Tien won the Moselle Open, while Jodar bagged the title at the Charlottesville Challenger.
Another factor working in Tien's favor is his prior experience of competing in this tournament. With a different set of rules, including first to four games in a set and no-ad scoring, this is a completely different ball game. The learning curve for Jodar could put him on the backfoot. The fast-paced format leaves little room for error.
Tien also has a 8-1 record against players ranked outside the top 100 this year. His only loss came against Nicolas Jarry, a former top 20 player who had fallen down the rankings. The American will be expected to make a winning start to his campaign.
Pick: Learner Tien to win in four sets.
