Lakers named landing spot for $63 million Knicks NBA champion duo

The Los Angeles Lakers seem to have an action-packed offseason ahead, as they’ve already been linked to several high-value wings and big men.

According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the Lakers would be a solid fit for an impactful New York Knicks NBA champion who could start the 2026-27 season elsewhere.

“The risk of pursuing an RFA, of course, is that the player's current team has 48 hours to match, and L.A.'s available money would be tied up in that interim, making it a dangerous move,” McMenamin wrote Thursday.

“Among the unrestricted free agents who would slot well alongside Doncic, Detroit's Tobias Harris, Miami's Norman Powell, Chicago's Anfernee Simons, New York's Mitchell Robinson, Charlotte's Coby White, Philadelphia's Quentin Grimes, Cleveland's Dean Wade, and New York's Landry Shamet all fit L.A.'s needs to varying degrees.”

It’s a bit surprising that Shamet has been an NBA journeyman to start his NBA career, given his proven three-point shooting process in a reserve role and ability to immediately impact games upon entering them.

Wisely, the Knicks signed him in 2024 and haven’t regretted it thus far. The Wichita product shot 39.7% from deep during his first season with New York and 39.2% this past season. As a result, it’s only right to include Shamet on the list of contributors who had a hand in helping the Knicks secure an awe-inspiring championship in 2026.

Robinson deserves to be on that list as well, as his game-changing offensive rebounding and interior defense were much-needed against the San Antonio Spurs. Robinson averaged 5.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game with the Knicks this year, shooting 72.3% from the field.

Needless to say, adding Shamet and/or Robinson to their roster would do wonders for a Lakers squad that needs more dependable perimeter shooting off the bench and low-post play.
