A lot of factors will determine which player wins the NBA MVP in the last nine games of the season. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is no longer the runaway favorite after Victor Wembanyama rose all the way to the top. However, this 82-game campaign is far from over and a certain Los Angeles Lakers guard is still stating his case. Luka Doncic etched his name further in league history to join Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and other notable names in this scoring feat.
Doncic's scoring feat could mean another Lakers NBA MVP
Doncic currently averages 33.8 points per game for the Lakers and also leads the league in scoring. There is not a player who has reached that impressive single-season milestone without clinching the NBA MVP. He joins impressive legends like Bryant, Jordan, James Harden, and Joel Embiid as the only five players in league history to do so, via Shaun Powell of NBA.com.
To make matters more impressive, Doncic has been on an incredible scoring stretch to close out the Lakers' regular season campaign. In the past 11 games, he is averaging an insane 39.5 points. He is also not just chucking up shots too. The Lakers superstar is getting all these buckets on a 47.4% clip from the field while he knocks down 36.4% of his shots from three-point range. All of this while he also contributes in running Coach JJ Redick's offense through facilitating and dishing out 8.3 assists per night means that he is at his peak offensive prowess.
More than that, Doncic has greatly improved on the defensive side of the ball. In those last 11 games, he has grabbed an average of 2.5 steals which has prevented any opponent of the Lakers to gain much offensive momentum. He also closes out possessions well which gets his team 7.8 rebounds on a nightly basis.
The case is there for another NBA MVP out of the Lakers system. If Doncic does notch the feat, he cements his legacy in Los Angeles alongside Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. This list only involved winners of the NBA MVP award for a reason and it looks like the streak will either be broken or kept the same.
