The Los Angeles Lakers may be one of the biggest winners of NBA free agency. They got themselves a starting-level center for cheap, picked up two strong role players. The Lakers roster seems ready to compete for a title behind Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
Now the Lakers have strengthened their roster even further with a recent free agency signing.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on the recent Lakers free agency signing.
“The Los Angeles Lakers plan to sign 7-footer Christian Koloko and forward Chris Manon on two-way NBA contracts, sources tell ESPN. Manon, undrafted out of Vanderbilt, played for the Warriors in California and Las Vegas summer leagues. Koloko played 37 games for L.A. last season…This is a continuation of the Lakers development plan with Koloko, who had other interested teams as well.”
While signing the Lakers-Koloko signing isn’t as big of a deal as the DeAndre Ayton or Marcus Smart signings, it does show a solid step for the Lakers.
If the Lakers are planning to operate with some big contracts like Luka's and LeBron’s, they need to get some help from their two-way players.
Ideally, Koloko can step in and play minor minutes as a backup center for the Lakers next season and down the line. Last year he only played in 37 games. He averaged 2.4 points and 2.5 rebounds on over 60% shooting last year.

So while the Lakers-Koloko signing might not push the Lakers over the edge, developing a young player with potential who they can later get on a cheap contract is a winning move.
