Kyle Schwarber's Opening Day homer has interesting coincidence that bodes well for Phillies

1 hour ago 3

The Philadelphia Phillies went into the offseason with one main goal: re-sign Kyle Schwarber. They accomplished their goal and brought him back on a $150 million contract over the next five years.

Schwarber's first at-bat since signing that massive extension for the Phillies came on Opening Day against the Texas Rangers and star pitcher Nathan Eovaldi. Schwarber launched a pitch into the stands in left field for an Opening Day homer.

That Opening Day homer for Schwarber made for a very interesting coincidence, and one that could bode well for the Phillies. As Jayson Stark of The Athletic shared, this is not the first Opening Day homer for Schwarber after signing with the Phillies in free agency.

Kyle Schwarber makes odd, coincidental history with Opening Day homer

"Kyle Schwarber has signed 2 free-agent contracts with the Phillies," Stark shared. "1st PA after the first one (in 2022): HR on Opening Day in his first AB of the season. 1st PA after the second one (today): HR on Opening Day in his first AB of the season."

Somehow, Schwarber, in his first at-bat after signing a free-agent contract with the Phillies, hit a home run on Opening Day.

In 2022, the Phillies signed Schwarber on a four-year, $79 million deal. His first at-bat for the Phillies was a home run on Opening Day.

Four years later, Schwarber signed a five-year $150 million deal to return to the Phillies, and in his first at-bat on Opening Day, he hit a home run.

That's an odd coincidence, but hopefully for the Phillies, it's a sign of things to come. The 2022 season led to a World Series appearance, which would be ideal for the Phillies this year.

It won't be easy, and it's only been one game. But they started off the season with a win, a few of their new players looked good, and Cristopher Sanchez looked as good as ever. And, of course, Schwarber went yard.

This history for Schwarber is merely a coincidence, but with history tending to repeat itself, hopefully, a World Series appearance is in store for the Phillies this season.
