Kuldeep Yadav struck immediately after lunch break on Day 1 by dismissing Wiaan Mulder in the first Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens on Friday, November 14. Mulder went for a reverse sweep but was caught plumb in front of the stumps. The right-handed batter departed for 24 runs off 51 balls as the Proteas lost their fourth wicket for 114.

The dismissal came in the 30th over of South Africa’s first innings. Kuldeep bowled a legbreak around the middle stump, and Mulder missed the reverse sweep as the ball hit him in the front pad. The on-field umpire immediately raised his finger, but Mulder went for a review after a consultation with his partner, Tony de Zorzi. However, the replays showed the ball would’ve crashed into the middle stump.

It was Kuldeep Yadav’s second wicket of the day, having dismissed skipper Temba Bavuma for 3 in the first session. On the other hand, Wiaan Mulder continued his third consecutive failure, having scored 17 and 0 against Pakistan in the previous Test last month. He, however, slammed an unbeaten 367 against Zimbabwe in July.

Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah help India stay on top of the Proteas in the series opener; SA lose two quick wickets after Lunch on Day 1

A clinical bowling display from Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah helped India dominate South Africa on Day 1 of the series opener. Bumrah broke the 57-run opening stand by knocking over Ryan Rickelton (23) before getting Aiden Markram caught behind for 31. Later, he trapped de Zorzi lbw for 24.

Kuldeep Yadav, in particular, continued his purple patch with the ball, having scalped 12 wickets against the West Indies in the previous home Test series in October.

At the time of writing, the tourists were 120/5 after 32.3 overs, with Kyle Verreynne and Tristan Stubbs at the crease.

The South Africa A side recently stunned India A by chasing down 147 in the second practice match. The senior team last won a Test against India in 2010. India won the last two home Test series against the Proteas by identical 3-0 margins in 2015/16 and 2019/20. Notably, the Proteas haven’t won a Test series in India since 1999/00.
