In today’s NBA, franchises should prioritize identifying sharpshooters who could serve as valuable floor spacers on the offensive end.
The New York Knicks did just that on Tuesday, adding a 6-foot-6 former Los Angeles Lakers three-point specialist to the fold.
“The New York Knicks announced today that the team has signed Matt Ryan to an Exhibit 10 contract,” the organization announced.
“Ryan, 28 years old (6-foot-6, 215 pounds), most recently appeared in nine games with the Knicks last season. He registered a career-high 20 points on 70% shooting, two rebounds, two assists, and six three-pointers against Detroit (Pistons).”
Ryan was a fan favorite with the Lakers during the beginning of the 2022-23 season. The Chattanooga product wasn’t a high-profile contributor entering the year, but was determined to earn the franchise’s respect from the get-go.
Although Ryan was only a 3.9 points per game scorer, there were plenty of positives to take away from his 12-game stint in Los Angeles.

From drilling a clutch corner three against the New Orleans Pelicans at the end of the regulation to force overtime to shooting 54.5% from long range in October, the 28-year-old exhibited promise off the bench for a short period (the Lakers waived him in early December).
After Ryan's time with the Lakers expired, he spent time with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Pelicans before agreeing to a deal with the Knicks last November.
Surprisingly, Ryan, a 40.2% career three-point shooter, struggled with his perimeter jump shot.
The 28-year-old only connected on 31.6% of his triples in 19 contests with the Knicks. Still, New York feels comfortable giving Ryan a do-over in 2025-26.
