Knicks reportedly considered a Donte DiVincenzo reunion

The New York Knicks needed Karl-Anthony Towns.

One of the league’s all-time best shooting big men, he paired nicely with Jalen Brunson as they spearheaded the Knicks’ offensive efforts and led them to the Eastern Conference Finals.

New York did have to sacrifice Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, a first-round pick, and two second-round picks for Towns, but it already looks like a worthwhile investment.

However, the Knicks have a bench problem, particularly with consistent scoring, and could look to bring back DiVincenzo to bolster that unit.

Kris Pursiainen of ClutchPoints had this to say on a DiVincenzo reunion:

Had heard around New Year’s that the Knicks had had internal discussions about a potential reunion with Donte DiVincenzo in this upcoming offseason but aside from things changing, as they tend to do, Jeremy makes a good case here for why you can consider that unlikely https://t.co/aH5jOUHJor

DiVincenzo still has two years on his contract, which will pay him about $24.4 million. His current team, the Minnesota Timberwolves, could feel maxed out after another Western Conference Finals loss and look to shake things up for next year.

Minnesota has to figure out what to do with free agent Nickeil Alexander-Walker, as well as Naz Reid and Mike Conley, who will be free agents next summer. Perhaps the Timberwolves get overwhelmed with these decisions and ship DiVincenzo back to New York for a mini reset.

DiVincenzo was not quite the player Minnesota fans had hoped for, averaging 11.7 points on 42/39/78 splits, with 3.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 25.9 minutes per game. Those were a tick down from his Knicks usage in 2023-24, which saw him average 15.5 points on 44/40/75 splits, with 3.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 29.1 minutes per game.

He is still a very solid bench player and a reliable defender come playoff time. Maybe New York dangles one of their enticing, young point guards like Deuce McBride or Tyler Kolek, plus a picks haul, for DiVincenzo.

The Knicks could use a complementary ball-handler and spot-up shooter, and why not target someone so familiar with the franchise, as unlikely as it may be?
