Knicks officially sign 6-foot-11 ex-Lakers rebounding star to replace Mitchell Robinson

Losing Mitchell Robinson to a three-year, $47 million contract with the Boston Celtics was a tough blow for the New York Knicks.

The 7-foot rebounding phenomenon was arguably the Knicks’ most valuable second unit contributor for the NBA champion Knicks this season, regularly having his way on the glass and making life hectic for San Antonio Spurs Victor Wembanyama in the NBA Finals when tasked with containing him.

Fortunately for the Knicks, they’ve officially signed their replacement for Robinson: a former Los Angeles Lakers rebounding star and two-time All-Star.

“The New York Knicks announced today that the team has signed Andre Drummond,” the franchise said in a press release. “Drummond appeared in 63 games (25 starts) with the Philadelphia 76ers last season, recording 6.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 0.8 blocks over 19.5 minutes.”

“He recorded 14 points, a season-high 24 rebounds (including nine offensive rebounds), two blocks, and one assist vs. Miami (Heat) last season (Nov 23, 2025), registering the second-most rebounds in a single game last season (Scottie Barnes – 25). Drummond has totaled 11,513 rebounds during his career, trailing only LeBron James (12,095) for the second-most total rebounds among active players.”

While Drummond isn’t a great vertical athlete and is unquestionably on the slow-footed side (explaining why he’s a bit limited on both ends), his rebounding pedigree could result in him replicating Robinson’s success with the Knicks off the bench.

Drummond, who recorded 10.2 rebounds per game in 21 games with the Lakers in 2020-21 (16.5 per 40 minutes), has the motor and ball tracking skills necessary to be just what New York needs in an ideal Robinson replacement.

It’ll be interesting to see how the UConn product handles life as backup center on the reigning champion Knicks.
