The New York Knicks are coming off an NBA championship, but there is a little bit of drama as training camp continues. New York is in a spot where they are going to have to figure out how to evenly distribute contract money to their stars.
Right now, things are not going great with Karl-Anthony Towns as contract extension talks have begun. If Towns wants to get an extension with the Knicks, he is going to have to make a sacrifice.
“Karl-Anthony Towns is going to have to take a discount if he wants to remain with the Knicks. Jalen Brunson did so for them to win a championship… It's gonna have to be Towns to be the one to sacrifice… I don't think an extension gets done anytime soon," NBA insider Brett Siegel said.
The NBA champion has been vocal this preseason for the Knicks. He has been clear that he wants to remain with the Knicks.
“I've made it known I want to play here; I've been a fan since I was young. I would like to get one done, of course. Get it done so I can step on the court and feel as comfortable as possible," Towns said.
It has been clear that the two sides are pretty far off in terms of a contract, but it is just a matter of what the difference is. It turns out the difference could be somewhere in the $77 million range after his latest $200 million contract update.
“The Knicks have offered KAT around $200 million, league sources confirmed to The Post, which is $77 million less than his max,” New York Post’s Stefan Bondy wrote.
The two sides have a lot of room to make up, as there is currently a big gap between what is wanted and what is being offered. The Knicks know they have to save money to keep the core guys together.
It is just a matter of how much New York will go up and how far below the max Towns will be willing to take. Things are not looking good at the moment, and the gap between the sides can’t be overlooked either.
