Knicks cut ties with 6-foot-4 former Celtics guard one day after his retirement announcement

The New York Knicks were thrown off guard last week by a shocking career decision involving their recently signed 6-foot-5 guard.

The 32-year-old former Boston Celtics guard elected to retire before the 2025-26 season, negatively affecting New York’s backcourt depth.

Two hours after the 2023 Sixth Man of the Year announced his retirement, the Knicks announced news of their own, citing that they had waived the dependable veteran.

“NY Knicks Waive Malcolm Brogdon,” the Knicks' official PR X/Twitter account stated last Thursday.

Technically, Brogdon stepped away from the Knicks on his own accord, but New York’s public statement regarding his status with the franchise confirms that the two parties are parting ways.

Considering the Knicks have plenty of talent at their disposal following their 2024-25 Eastern Conference Finals appearance, losing Brogdon, who agreed to a deal with New York last month, won’t turn Mike Brown’s group into a non-contender.

However, the Virginia product’s ability to serve as a veteran leader off the bench who could help keep the Knicks’ heads above water on both ends would have made them a more formidable Eastern Conference squad.

Brogdon averaged 4.2 points, 2.0 assists, and 1.2 steals per game with the Knicks in four preseason contests.

Unfortunately for New York, Brogdon’s preseason production is all he will be remembered for in a Knicks uniform.
