Knicks’ $60 million big man explains free throw shooting improvement

New York Knicks big man Mitchell Robinson is one of the league’s best offensive rebounders and rim protectors in the NBA, but he also comes with one major flaw.

Robinson’s free throw shooting has bedeviled him severely throughout his career. In his career, Robinson is just a 52 percent shooter from the charity stripe. In the playoffs, Robinson has been subjected to the “hack-a-Shaq” treatment, as teams will opt to intentionally foul and put Robinson at the line instead of playing standard defense. It’s paid off for the Knicks’ opponents, as Robinson is shooting just 39 percent from the free-throw line in his playoff career.

Last season in just 17 games, Robinson improved his free throw shooting immensely, knocking down a career-best 68 percent of his free throws. He spoke with the New York Post’s Stefan Bondy about some of the changes that he’s been making to his routine to improve his free throw shooting.

“I kind of scooted over a little bit,” Robinson said. “Actually, it works for me. One dribble, then go right to it.”

“We’ve got to give him confidence and we’ve got to find the right guy to make sure that he’s working with him in that area while he’s getting the repetitions and putting his work in,” head coach Mike Brown added.

Robinson will look to improve his shooting from the line even further this season, as he looks to be a key figure for a Knicks team that is aiming to snap a 52-year title drought in the 2025-26 season.
