Klint Kubiak had an opportunity Friday to clear the fog surrounding Brock Bowers’ knee surgery.
The Raiders coach only made it thicker.
Kubiak officially ruled Bowers out of Sunday’s season opener against the Dolphins, then struggled to explain when the injury emerged and when Las Vegas learned its star tight end needed a procedure.
“It all happened pretty quick,” Kubiak told reporters. “I don’t remember exactly what day, but yeah, we got it cleaned up.”
When asked whether the reported one-to-two-game absence was accurate, Kubiak shut down the subject.
“I’m not going to talk about timelines,” he said.
That might have sounded like standard NFL secrecy if not for Kubiak’s assurance two days earlier.
Bowers underwent a meniscus trim Tuesday in Dallas. The injury occurred during training camp but reportedly was not diagnosed until last week. When Kubiak was asked Wednesday about the availability of Bowers and Maxx Crosby, he responded, “We’re expecting to have all of our guys ready for Sunday.”
By then, the procedure had already taken place.
The discrepancy prompted The California Post’s Vincent Bonsignore to question whether Kubiak had crossed the line from guarded to deceitful.
Nothing in the public record proves Kubiak lied. He maintains that he believed Bowers might play even after surgery. But his blanket assurance created an impression that proved misleading, and Friday’s hazy recollection did little to resolve the contradiction.
The evasiveness matters because Bowers is the centerpiece of Kubiak’s offense, not merely another starter. He followed his NFL rookie-record 112 catches in 2024 with 64 receptions, 680 yards and seven touchdowns during an injury-shortened 2025 season.
His rookie efficiency further illustrates the size of the loss.
On plays in which Bowers was directly involved, the Raiders generated approximately 0.57 EPA per play with a 56.3% success rate. Saquon Barkley, the 2024 Offensive Player of the Year, produced approximately 0.13 EPA per play with a 44.1% success rate on his direct opportunities.
Michael Mayer will assume a larger role, but replacing Bowers’ alignment versatility and matchup power will require a collective adjustment.
Kubiak finally provided one clear answer Friday: Bowers will not play Sunday.
How the Raiders arrived there remains considerably murkier.
