Kings predicted to trade Sabonis for role players, picks in blockbuster proposal

3 hours ago 2

The Sacramento Kings are in NBA purgatory. They aren’t contending for an NBA championship, and they aren’t tanking for young prospects. They don’t have any promising blue-chip prospects, and their veterans are good but not great. That’s why the Kings' trade rumors have been so popular this offseason. They need to shake things up.

One way the Kings could really pivot towards the future would be by trading their last remaining star. Domantas Sabonis has been a steady presence for the Kings, but it might be time to ask what type of ceiling a team led by him can have. That’s why this Sabonis trade idea could help the Kings pivot towards a new future.

The Kings' trade idea looks like this:

Sacramento Kings receive: Daniel Gafford, PJ Washington, Caleb Martin, Jaden Hardy, Lakers’ 2029 first-round pick

Dallas Mavericks receive: Domantas Sabonis, Isaac Jones

This might not seem like a great haul for Sabonis. After all, he’s been one of the best centers in the league for years now. Still, his perceived value around the NBA might not be as high as the Kings believe it is. Sabonis’ defensive limitations really limit how great a team can be with him at center.

So, should the Kings go for a trade like this? Probably not. If the Kings are going to trade Sabonis, they should prioritize a package centered around young players and picks. While Gafford and Washington are solid players, they aren’t going to help the Kings turn their franchise around.

The Kings should genuinely consider blowing it up. They aren’t good enough to compete with the best in the Western Conference. They aren’t bad enough to land a top lottery pick. They need to pick a direction. Trading Sabonis could push them towards a much-needed rebuild. This just isn’t the trade to do it with.
