The Sacramento Kings are a basketball organization currently dealing with a lot of different moving parts as training camp quickly approaches. They are going through some problems with their main guy, Domantas Sabonis, regarding his future with the team.
They also are still trying to fill out their roster in what everyone knows isn’t likely to be a good season. However, a couple of weeks ago, they did sign former first overall pick Ben Simmons.
“Three-time All-Star Ben Simmons has agreed on a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Sacramento Kings, his agents Max Wiepking, Sean Tribe and Ryan Arney tell me and Marc J Spears. The one-time All-NBA star is back in the NBA for a 10th season after sitting out 2025-26,” ESPN’s Shams Charania wrote.
Simmons took last season off to work on his mental capacity and fully escape from basketball. Now, he is back, hoping to revive his career. The former first overall pick also had interest from other teams.
“The Kings weren’t the only team considering Simmons, as league sources say the Knicks and Warriors were also in the mix,” The Athletic’s Sam Amick wrote.
Sacramento won that battle for Simmons, but they might not be done in free agency. Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes believes the Kings will sign former first-round draft pick Cam Whitmore.
“Cam Whitmore may be on the way out of the league, but any team with a talent deficit and little to lose should be willing to give him one more shot. The Sacramento Kings fit that description pretty well, and they should have interest in seeing if there's something valuable still hiding inside the athletic wing who was recently waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers,” Hughes wrote.
The Kings are not expected to be good; however, they are putting together a roster with some intriguing pieces. Whitmore would have a lot of opportunity in Sacramento that he isn’t going to have with a lot of other teams.
Whitmore was on a $15 million contract before being released by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He is a scorer, but his defense needs some work. With his career on the line, this could potentially be his last chance.
