On Saturday, Russell Westbrook added another milestone to his Hall of Fame career when he surpassed Magic Johnson on the list of all-time assists leaders. Westbrook pulled off this feat in the second quarter of the Sacramento Kings' game against the Dallas Mavericks. After picking up a defensive board, the nine-time All-Star dished the ball to Keon Ellis, who converted on a layup in transition.
For all the detractors that Westbrook has had in his illustrious career, several fans expressing admiration made themselves vocal on social media after this incredible feat.

This guy’s the king of being underrated
Incredible achievement for Russ—passing Magic on the all-time assists list cements his legacy as one of the greatest playmakers ever. The Brodie’s still got it! 🔥🏀
Greatest Point. Guard. ever.
One netizen even pointed out the irony that Johnson had once criticized Westbrook's performance as a point guard during the 2012 NBA Finals, back when Brodie was still playing for the OKC Thunder.
"Not bad for a guy that Magic once referred to as the 'worst finals PG ever,'" this netizen pointed out.Not bad for a guy that Magic once referred to as the “worst finals PG ever”
Westbrook's career achievement coincided with a win for the Sacramento Kings, who badly need to notch victories as they languish with an 8-23 record.
The 18-year veteran finished with nine assists to go along with his 21 points and five rebounds. With 10,149 dimes in his career, Westbrook can now set his sights on no. 6 Mark Jackson (10,334 assists) and no. 5 Steve Nash (10,335 assists).
In all likelihood, Westbook has just a handful of seasons left before he calls it a career. Though a championship continues to elude him, his statistical feats have cemented his place as one of the greatest guards to play in the NBA.
"He's a legend in so many ways": Russell Westbrook comments on passing Magic Johnson in career assists

"Grateful to pass him because he's such a legend in so many ways," Westbrook told reporters.Westbrook also shared that he emulated Johnson off the court as well, especially in terms of his philanthropic pursuits. According to Westbrook, Johnson has inspired him to reach out to the "underserved" throughout his career.
