Kevin Stefanski announces major change to Cleveland Browns' offense

The Cleveland Browns are making a major change to their offense after a much-needed Week 9 bye week.

Stefanski announced Monday morning that he's turning over playcalling duties to offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. The Browns head coach added that his offense needs to be better collectively, and that Rees is more than capable of flourishing as the playcaller.

"He's [Rees is] more than capable. Bottom line, we have to get better collectively," Stefanski said.

Cleveland's offense has been absolutely abysmal this season, as the unit is averaging just 15.8 points and 263.5 total yards per game, both ranking in the bottom three.

Though the Browns' offensive struggles aren't completely on Stefanski, the sixth-year head coach has regressed as a playcaller and has failed to get the most out of his players.

The quarterback position has also been a disaster for Cleveland. Joe Flacco started the first four games, and then rookie Dillon Gabriel took over. Flacco has since been traded to the Cincinnati Bengals, while Gabriel has kept the starting spot and been subpar.

Rees has no experience as an offensive playcaller in the NFL. The 33-year-old was the offensive coordinator at Notre Dame from 2020 to 2022 and also spent a season at Alabama in 2023. He joined Cleveland's staff in 2024 as the pass game specialist and tight ends coach before becoming the offensive coordinator for the 2025 campaign after Ken Dorsey was fired.

We'll see if Rees can get the Browns' offense going and provide a spark. However, based on the group's performance through eight games, a playcalling change likely isn't going to do much.
