In an era of parity in the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs have a chance to lay the foundation for a future dynasty. The franchise has drafted a pair of franchise cornerstones, Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, and was proactive by acquiring All-NBA guard De'Aaron Fox for a massive discount.
That core alone would be tantalizing. San Antonio still has plenty of other young assets and a treasure trove of pick capital, including the second selection in the upcoming loaded NBA Draft.
There are endless avenues the Spurs' front office can take to improve this roster, with one analyst suggesting they might've already made the move for a future first-ballot Hall of Famer.
On a recent edition of his self-named podcast, Bill Simmons theorized the Spurs might've already traded for Suns superstar Kevin Durant, with both clubs waiting to announce the deal.
"I wouldn't be surprised if KD to the Spurs is done already, and they just haven't announced it," Simmons said. Basically, they've agreed on specifics; just announce it on the week of the draft. They'll be able to be real competitive and maybe go a couple of rounds in the playoffs, but they're also going to keep the No. 2 pick and do it that way, which is my prediction."
On the brink of 37 with an expiring contract, the cost to snag Durant would likely only be salary fillers and some protected picks. Even with the injury concerns, Durant's still a lethal scorer and is the type of wing this squad desperately needs.
Drafting Rutgers product Dylan Harper would add another blue-chip talent to the fold and could be either the foundational point guard or an enticing trade piece for a future, larger move.
Could you imagine a starting lineup with Harper, Fox, Castle, Durant, and Wemby?
