Kenny Atkinson admits the Cavaliers got unlucky in their fourth-quarter collapse in Game 1

The Cleveland Cavaliers had a 22-point lead in the fourth quarter of Game 1 against the New York Knicks. Unfortunately, the Cavs had a historic collapse, as they gave up a 44-11 run over the final 7:45 of regulation and overtime.

Sam Merrill had an opportunity to win with a game-winning three-pointer late in the fourth quarter, but it rimmed out. Even ESPN commentator Mike Breen had his iconic "Bang!" call lined up, but it did not go in.

Kenny Atkinson believes the Cavaliers were unlucky to lose Game 1

As the head coach of the Cavaliers, Kenny Atkinson has done a wonderful job of leading the team. Unfortunately, Game 1 against the Knicks was only good for three quarters because their late collapse was not a great look.

Jalen Brunson took over for the Knicks, as he scored 17 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. He spearheaded the comeback, and the Knicks never looked back, as they dominated the extra period.

Atkinson will always bat for his players, but it is hard to defend what happened. On Inside the NBA, Charles Barkley was quite candid in calling it a choke because it was a truly historic collapse for Cleveland.

"We got a little unlucky, quite honestly. Brunson took over in the fourth quarter. We started double-teaming him, tried to do different things, but listen, I'm super proud of how our group played tonight. We played great basketball for three quarters. Unfortunately, they dominated us in the fourth quarter," Atkinson said after the game in his press conference.

It will be hard for Atkinson and the Cavaliers to bounce back from this. They had the win in the bag, but they failed to close it out.

Of course, the Cavs have proven they can come back from adversity in this postseason. They will be back and motivated to prove everyone wrong again.
