Kelly Ripa got the chance to gas up Mark Consuelos on Live with Kelly and Mark—for his gas, no less.
On Thursday’s episode, Ripa informed viewers of “smart underwear” being developed by University of Maryland research designers to measure flatulence.
“They’re seeking volunteers,” she read, eliciting laughter from the studio audience. “It’s a small device that snaps into the wearer’s underpants, and it uses electromechanical sensors to track the gas. They said to think of it like a continuous glucose monitor, but for farts.”
As Ripa read more about the “smart underwear,” Consuelos offered up the one condition he would have if he chose to participate in the study.
“I would be only into this thing if it gave you like a rank,” he quipped. “Like, ‘Oh, that was good! Congratulations! Duration.'”
Ripa replied, “You want to be a gold medalist.”
Consuelos added, “I’d be into that. Like, let’s go. I’m wearing all kinds of monitors.”
Ripa assured her husband and co-host that a gold medal for farts wouldn’t necessarily be far out of reach.

Ripa read more about the stinky study, noting the “three categories that they are seeking to study.”
“There are zen digesters, those who consume high-fiber diets yet rarely pass gas. Hydrogen hyper-producers,” she said with a knowing glance at Consuelos.
Consuelos asked, “A lot of protein?”
“Simply put, people who fart a lot. And then normal people,” Ripa said with a laugh. “People who fall in between the other people.”
