Keke Palmer is using her voice to tell her side of the story. The actress, whose new memoir Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative hit stands today, reacted to the public coverage of her messy breakup on this morning’s episode of The View.

Palmer sparked a romance with Darius Jackson in 2021 before they welcomed their baby boy the following year. But in November 2023, Palmer was granted a temporary restraining order against Jackson, alleging domestic and emotional abuse. He countered with his own legal response claiming she was the “primary aggressor,” per E! News.

The True Jackson VP star opened up about why she decided to share her story in her new book.

“If it could be of service to somebody — I mean, I think a lot got out there that I would have preferred not to get out there,” she told the co-hosts of The View. “But since it’s there, we gotta talk about it.”

“The book is Master of Me: Controlling Your Narrative. I get to tell my own story,” Palmer continued. “If you’re gonna pull my information out and tell other people about it, you don’t get the last say, sweetie. I do. This is my story and so ultimately that was why I talked about it. Because it’s my story. And I get to tell it the way I want to tell it.”

Palmer writes in her book that her legal back-and-forth was the “hardest thing” she’s ever had to go through.

“It got so out of control. The only way I knew how to bring order was through the court,” she adds, per an excerpt obtained by People.

According to Palmer, “having a baby was a big stressor” along with her fame. “Not just with my romantic relationships, but with family and friends, it’s always become a burden,” she writes. “Too many voices get in. It can make everybody else not trust you. It’s hard to explain.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
