Kate Martin could force Sparks to part ways with another player for contract reasons

1 hour ago 3

Kate Martin is on a developmental contract with the Los Angeles Sparks, which allots her up to 12 regular season appearances for L.A.

Martin has already gotten into four games since joining the Sparks on the eve of the 2026 WNBA season.

Soon enough, a decision could be coming.

If Martin keeps playing, and the Sparks want to keep her, they'll eventually have to cut someone else to give Martin a standard contract.

Kate Martin, who signed to a developmental contract with the Sparks on May 10, has checked in for her 4th game for LA. Developmental players can play a max of 12 games for a given team. Could Lynne Roberts be gearing to cut someone to make room for Martin to stay?

Martin, who first rose to fame as Caitlin Clark's teammate at Iowa, is with her third WNBA team in three seasons.

She was a Las Vegas Aces draft pick and played there as a rookie in 2024.

She then was part of the expansion Golden State Valkyries in 2025.

Now, she's with the Sparks after the Valkyries opted to cut her before the season.

So far, Martin is getting just 7.8 minutes per night. She is shooting 42.9% from 3-point range on a small sample, averaging 2.8 points per game.

The Sparks wouldn't necessarily want to cut someone else for a player getting eight minutes a night, but if Martin can keep making the case for more playing time, she might eventually earn herself a roster spot for the rest of the season.
