Karl-Anthony Towns did not arrive in New York looking to fit in around Jalen Brunson. He arrived with a much bigger promise.
The Knicks' big man revealed this week that he made that clear to Brunson on his first day with the franchise. Towns said he told Brunson he wanted to elevate him, protect him and make sure he never had to carry New York alone. Then he explained the one thing he wanted back in return.
He pointed at the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
That moment says a lot about the way Towns viewed this partnership from the start. Brunson was already the face of the Knicks and the player carrying the biggest burden in the city. Towns was not describing himself as a co-star who simply wanted touches and numbers. He was describing himself as reinforcement for the one player New York already trusted most.
“I want to make sure I amplify you to a whole another level,” Towns said of what he told Brunson when he first got to New York. He added that he wanted to be the “partner in crime” Brunson had not had and someone who would always be behind him to protect both him and the city.
Karl-Anthony Towns on what he told Jalen Brunson when he arrived in New York:
"I told you that the first day I got here and you welcome me here to New York, I said I want to make sure I amplify you to a whole another level that you haven't even recognized for yourself. I want to… pic.twitter.com/b7U5hkT6Gh
That is a strong quote on its own. It carries even more weight now because the Knicks actually finished the job. New York beat the Spurs in five games to win its first NBA championship in 53 years, with Brunson taking home Finals MVP and Towns playing a central role throughout the run.
Towns’ comments also help explain why the fit worked so quickly. This was never framed as Brunson versus Towns or whose team it really was. Towns understood the structure from the beginning. Brunson was the engine. Towns’ job was to make that engine stronger, take pressure off it and help drag the Knicks to the place the franchise had been chasing for decades.
That trophy point was not a joke. It was the entire plan.
