Karl-Anthony Towns is one of the league's best rebounders, and despite how important rebounds are, it seems to be disrespected. Towns has been quite an impactful player on the boards for a long time, which was evident during the New York Knicks' championship run in 2026.

Since then, Towns has kept being a nuisance on the boards. He is averaging 13.6 rebounds per game this season to go along with his 20.9 points a night. Towns is second in the league in rebounds, only behind Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis, who is averaging 14.6 rebounds per game.

Karl-Anthony Towns defends the value of rebounding in the NBA

Most older basketball fans and players would agree that rebounding is a necessary skill for teams to have in the league. These days, the other stats tend to get a lot of love, especially points, assists, steals, and blocks.

However, Towns has come to rebounding's defense because they are probably even more important now. With the abundance of three-pointers being taken, maximizing the number of possessions with rebounds means more opportunities to score points.

A notion that has popped up recently is that the rebounds are not as "sexy" as the other statistics. That is something that Towns certainly disagrees with.

"It's a sexy stat to me that damn sure looks sexy to me. Rebounding to me is about establishing the confidence of this team to shoot the ball with full confidence and allowing them to understand that, regardless of the result," Towns said after the Knicks' impressive win on Saturday.

"If you take care of the process and do your best with your jumper or your finishing, your teammate has your back."

Moving forward, more people should appreciate the value of rebounding. Sometimes, it could be the difference between a team winning a championship or being bounced out earlier in the Playoffs. Towns would know because he just won the championship as one of the league's premier rebounders.
