The spotlight entering Tuesday night's matchup between the Chicago Sky and Atlanta Dream belonged to Angel Reese. After all, it was Reese's first game back in Chicago since her offseason trade to Atlanta. The former Sky star received plenty of attention leading up to tipoff, with fans eager to see her return to Wintrust Arena.
But by halftime, another member of Chicago's celebrated 2024 draft class had stolen the show. Kamilla Cardoso delivered one of her strongest starts of the season and reached a significant milestone in the process, becoming the latest young WNBA star to surpass 1,000 career points.
Cardoso hits 1,000-point mark against former teammate
The milestone moment came in fitting fashion. Cardoso scored her 1,000th career point on a tough basket over Reese, creating a memorable scene between two players who helped usher in a new era of Sky basketball just two seasons ago.
Chicago quickly celebrated the achievement on social media as fans recognized another important step in Cardoso's development. The 6-foot-7 center was dominant from the opening tip. She opened the game a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and consistently established position in the paint against Atlanta's frontcourt. By halftime, Cardoso had already reached double figures and looked determined to control the game inside.

Sky building around their young star
While Reese's departure generated most of the headlines during the offseason, Cardoso has steadily become one of the franchise's most important building blocks. Entering Tuesday's contest, the Brazilian center was averaging 12.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.7 blocks per game. Her ability to impact both ends of the floor has made her one of the league's most promising young frontcourt players.
The former South Carolina standout has also shown flashes of becoming one of the WNBA's premier defensive anchors. Earlier this season, she recorded a career-high six blocks against the Washington Mystics and has continued to expand her offensive game. On a night many expected to be defined by Reese's return, Cardoso ensured Chicago fans had another reason to celebrate.
The Sky may still be searching for consistency this season, but their young center reaching 1,000 career points served as another reminder that one of the league's brightest rising stars is continuing to take major steps forward.
