Jonathan Kuminga runs risk of repeat Warriors offseason as Lakers rumors swirl

2 hours ago 3

Jonathan Kuminga has played the waiting game before.

Last offseason, the then-restricted free agent couldn't get an offer sheet anywhere and only after a long delay signed a new contract with the Golden State Warriors.

Since then, he's been traded to the Atlanta Hawks, who then declined his team option for the 2026-27 season.

That has Kuminga in unrestricted free agency now. He doesn't face the same dilemma of the offer sheet situation of being an RFA last year.

Still, though, the NBA calendar has arrived at Monday, July 6, and Kuminga is still a free agent.

This isn't on par with last year's waiting game, but it can't be ideal for Kuminga.

Many players have already signed, which takes away cap space from some potential suitors.

Rumors are swirling that the Los Angeles Lakers want Kuminga, but until that comes to pass, those are just rumors.

Some guys -- like 41-year old LeBron James -- don't mind waiting, and even can afford to do so.

But given how last offseason went for Kuminga, it would make sense for him to want a deal to sign as soon as possible.

He obviously wants the right fit. He'll only get so many chances to prove he really belongs in a key role for an NBA team.

Kuminga's offensive talent is clear, but his overall package has left something to be desired in both Golden State and Atlanta.

The athletic forward will be hoping that his overall ability is tantalizing enough, though, to get a contract in front of him and signed before another offseason turns into a long process for him.
