The Washington Wizards' attempts at tanking will finally come to a halt. They finally have a shot at drafting one of AJ Dybantsa, Cameron Boozer, or Darius Acuff after getting the top pick in the NBA Draft Lottery. Alongside greats like Trae Young and Anthony Davis, a lot of hope gushed out of every single fan of the franchise. No one was more excited than John Wall.
Wall elated after Wizards land No. 1 pick in NBA Draft Lottery
For the first time since 2010, the Wizards have the top pick and won the NBA Draft Lottery. The last player the Wizards selected when they had the No. 1 pick was John Wall and he represented them as the ping pong balls decided the fate of the league. Wall, the five-time NBA All-Star and one-time All-NBA selection, was elated after hearing the Wizards get called last.
"Ted (Leonsis) is going crazy. I was nervous. I was looking to the left, trying to see every sheet they were opening up. When I see Utah at two, I said, 'Alright, we got one'. It is lit," the former Wizards NBA All-Star said.
This marks the seventh No. 1 pick that the Wizards won, which makes them have the most top picks in all-time NBA Draft history over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Prior to 2026, Wall was their last top pick back in 2010. Kwame Brown was their other most recent No. 1 pick back in 2001.
Now, the Wizards have an opportunity. Great prospects like AJ Dybantsa, Darius Acuff, Cameron Boozer, and Caleb Wilson sit atop the 2026 NBA Draft class. This turns the franchise around because they now have Anthony Davis and Trae Young as star veterans to help in the development of whoever they draft.
2026 will likely be the last year that the Wizards remain uncompetitive. With Young and Davis alongside a youthful core, they will be in the NBA Playoffs race in no time.
