John Oliver reveals whether he’s worried about his job as late-night chaos ensues

John Oliver is trying to keep it light amid the late-night show tsunami.

The “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” host laughed when Page Six asked if he has been a little more frugal since Stephen Colbert’s show was recently canceled and Jimmy Kimmel was briefly suspended.

“Thanks for asking that as softly as you possibly could,” he teased while chatting with us on the red carpet at the Only Make Believe Gala in New York City Monday night.

“I mean, the beauty of, you know, living with an axe over your head is… every day is a gift,” he added. “I am acting like everything is fine, and I will act that way right up until the point that it isn’t.”

It has been a turbulent time for talk shows lately, with unexpected cancellations and suspensions recently making headlines.

Colbert announced last July his “The Late Show” franchise was ending in 2026 after more than 30 years on the air.

CBS claimed that the decision was “purely financial.” However, many fans argued that Colbert’s pointed criticism of the current administration may have played a factor in the show’s cancellation.

Meanwhile, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” was “suspended indefinitely” in September after the TV host discussed Charlie Kirk’s death during a monologue.

The right-wing political podcaster was shot and killed on Sept. 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. He was 31.

A huge outcry followed, with many criticizing ABC, which airs the talk show, for cowering to the FCC chair, Brendan Carr.

ABC quickly backtracked their decision, however, and Kimmel was back on the air days later.

President Trump took time out of governing the country to decry ABC for putting Kimmel back on air, calling them a “true bunch of losers.” He also called upon NBC to fire Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon.

Oliver, 48, told Page Six he was “horrified” by the Kimmel debacle.

“I was absolutely disgusted about what happened to him, and I’m very, very glad that it’s ended the way that it has,” he said, calling Kimmel “such a decent man.”

“Those few days were very, very hard on him. I’m very glad it was just a few days.”

The comedian hosted Monday night’s Only Make Believe Gala, which honored Anna Wintour with the James Hammerstein Award.
