John Elway's longtime agent and close friend, Jeff Sperbeck, tragically passed away due to accidental blunt head trauma, a new report has revealed.
According to the Riverside County Coroner's Bureau, Sperbeck’s death was ruled an accident that occurred when he fell from a moving golf cart on Saturday, April 26, in La Quinta, California. Sperbeck, 62, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and placed on life support, but was taken off a few days later on Wednesday, April 30.
In a statement to the Denver Post, the Riverside County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the incident appeared to be accidental, with no signs of criminal activity. Sheriff Chad Bianco further emphasized that while the high-profile nature of the incident drew significant media attention, the case remained a tragic accident.
"We’re doing everything we can to make sure that this is what it appears to be, and just an accident," Bianco said. Investigations, including equipment inspections on the golf cart, confirmed that no malfunction contributed to Sperbeck’s fall.
Elway, 64, expressed his devastation of the loss of his friend in a statement. "There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me," he said. The NFL legend offered his condolences to Sperbeck’s wife, Cori, and their children, adding, "Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship, and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others."
