"This is cathedral."
For one of the few times in recent years, Joey Chestnut entered the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest with more questions than certainty. The 17-time Mustard Belt champion returned to Coney Island looking to defend his title after another eventful year. There had been off-the-stage controversy, renewed challengers and plenty of discussion about whether anyone could finally knock him off his throne.
Instead, Chestnut did what he's done better than anyone in the history of competitive eating. He won.
Chestnut captured yet another Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest championship on Saturday, extending one of the most dominant dynasties in American sports and proving once again that the Fourth of July still belongs to him.
Joey Chestnut finished with 67 hot dogs and buns, defeating Patrick Bertolelli, who finished with 52.
Joey Chestnut adds another Mustard Belt
Every July 4 seems to begin with the same question: Can anyone finally beat Joey Chestnut? Every July 4 seems to end the same way.
Chestnut once again stood atop the leaderboard after 10 minutes of competition, adding another Mustard Belt to an already unmatched collection. His latest victory gives him 18 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest championships, further strengthening one of the greatest runs by any athlete in any sport.
Whether it's baseball, basketball, football or competitive eating, very few champions have dominated one event the way Chestnut has owned Coney Island.

Another reminder of his incredible legacy
Chestnut entered Saturday already holding virtually every meaningful record in competitive eating. His world record of 76 hot dogs and buns, set in 2021, remains the standard every competitor is trying to reach. He also returned as the defending champion after eating 70.5 hot dogs and buns in last year's contest.
Now he has another title to add to an already unmatched resume. The latest championship comes just one year after his emotional return to the contest following his absence in 2024 because of a sponsorship dispute. Any doubts about whether he still had another title run left were answered in convincing fashion.
Miki Sudo continues her own Fourth of July dynasty
The women's competition once again featured a familiar champion. Miki Sudo successfully defended her title by eating 38.75 hot dogs and buns, earning her 12th Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest championship. Michelle Lesco finished second with 22.
While Sudo didn't threaten her own world record of 51 hot dogs and buns, she once again showed why she has dominated the women's division for more than a decade. Since making her Nathan's debut in 2014, Sudo has won every contest she has entered except for 2021, when she did not compete because she was pregnant. Her latest victory only added to one of the greatest resumes in competitive eating history.
Alongside Chestnut, Sudo has become one of the faces of the event, helping make the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest one of the Fourth of July's most enduring traditions.
An American tradition continues
Few sporting events have become as closely tied to the Fourth of July as the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. Held every year outside the original Nathan's Famous restaurant in Coney Island, the event has grown into one of America's most recognizable holiday traditions. Thousands gathered along the famous boardwalk once again, while millions more watched on television to see if anyone could challenge the sport's biggest stars.
Instead, they witnessed another familiar ending. Chestnut and Sudo both walked away with Mustard Belts, continuing dynasties unlike anything else in sports.
What's next for Joey Chestnut?
At 42 years old, Chestnut continues to perform at an elite level. Every year brings fresh speculation that a younger challenger will finally end his reign. Every year, he reminds everyone why that hasn't happened yet.
Until someone proves otherwise, the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest remains Joey Chestnut's event. On another Fourth of July, the greatest competitive eater the sport has ever seen once again delivered exactly what fans have come to expect. Another title. Another Mustard Belt. Another reminder that no one has ever owned a sporting event quite like Joey Chestnut.
