Power is back. Power Book III: Raising Kanan released a trailer on Tuesday (May 19) for its fifth and final season, which returns to Starz on June 12.
Joey Bada$$ is back as Unique, looking to assert his preserve his spot in the game, while Mekai Curtis (Kanan Stark) continues to make a name for himself in the drug business. The clip is soundtracked by Nina Simone’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.”
There’s a twist for season 5, with Stark’s mother, Patina Miller (Raquel Thomas), making her return to the show.
“Kanan’s true ruthlessness takes shape. He knows exactly who he is and who he must become to defeat his enemies,” a log line for the show reads, per Variety. “As his relationship with Raq reaches a point of no return, and any chance of reconciliation becomes a distant memory, war is inevitable. Kanan solidifies his place in the Queens drug game alongside Breeze, the Southside legend, and their alliance sets the stage for a reckoning that will ripple through every player in this dangerous business.”
The statement continues: “Many sacrifices will be made, whether it’s the Thomas family facing the collapse of their reign, Unique fighting to preserve his legacy or the Mafia maneuvering behind the scenes. However, nothing will stand in the way of Kanan’s pursuit of power. After all, this isn’t the end for Kanan Stark. It’s just the beginning.”
There’s plenty of star power back in the fold for season 5, which includes London Brown (Marvin Thomas), Malcolm Mays (Lou Thomas), Hailey Kilgore (Jukebox), Wendell Pierce (Snaps), Erika Woods (Pop), Tony Danza (Stefano Marchetti) and Leslie Grossman (Flossie).
Executive producers for the season enlist Power creator Courtney Kemp, 50 Cent through his G-Unit Film & Television division, Sascha Penn and Mark Canton.
Next up, with Kanan wrapping, the Power universe will go back in time for a prequel titled Power: Origins, which is in production.
As for 50 Cent, he’s been busy, but making time for some fun. He reunited with Eminem earlier in May, as the “Patiently Waiting” collaborators hung out courtside for a playoff game in Detroit between the Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers.
