Joel Klatt compares CU’s Deion Sanders and Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin as $9 million coach ponders LSU, Florida, NFL

Joel Klatt sees Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders’ synergy with CU being similar to Ole Miss Rebels football coach Lane Kiffin’s with the University of Mississippi.

This is to say, Klatt believes Coach Prime and the leash the University of Colorado Boulder gives him is an exaggerated version of the freedom Kiffin has been granted at Ole Miss since being hired in December 2019.

Klatt predicts Kiffin sticking in Oxford, Mississippi, instead of opting for the LSU Tigers, Florida Gators, or the NFL, where the New York Giants offer a chance for Kiffin to reunite with Jaxson Dart.

“I don’t think Lane’s going to take (the LSU job.) I think he’s going to stay at Ole Miss. If you would have asked me last week, I would have said, 'No, no, no. He’s definitely going to leave,’” Klatt said ahead of Week 12’s action.

“Let me like make an analogy to Colorado, which is where I played. Colorado needed Deion Sanders badly, like they needed air to breathe. But I would make the argument Deion needed a place like Colorado because it wasn’t a place that was going to be heavy-handed with tradition or, ‘You can’t do this or that.’

“It’s just like, you’ve got the keys to the entire castle, do it how you want to do it, this is your program. And in some ways, Lane has that at Ole Miss, and he wouldn’t have that at other places.

“At Ole Miss, it’s his program. I think if you sat back, if you’re Lane, and you value that, then you would stay. That’s why I’m leaning that direction. I think Ole Miss is good for Lane as much as Lane is good for Ole Miss.”

Kiffin not accepting a new contract, despite the two sides entering negotiations over a month ago, has opened up speculation about his future. He hasn’t shut down any speculation and has even addressed it with his team. It feels like Kiffin’s future hinges on how the Rebs finish the season.

Funnily enough, it feels like his time at Ole Miss will outlive Coach Prime’s at Colorado regardless of what Kiffin decides to do this offseason.
