The singer shared a clip of him sporting a new drag persona while lip-synching to a clip from '90s horror show Are You Afraid of the Dark?
TikTok may or may not be shutting down in the U.S. on Sunday (Jan. 19), so Joe Jonas is using his precious time on the app to introduce fans to his drag alter ego.
In a video posted on Thursday night (Jan. 16), Jonas dressed in full drag — including some light makeup, a blunt brunette bob and a pleather dress showing off his chest tattoos — while lip-synching to an audio clip from the hit ’90s horror show Are You Afraid of the Dark?
“I’m going rollerskating,” he mouths in the clip. “Don’t touch my stuff.”
Fans immediately took to the comments section to express their excitement and confusion with Jonas’ look. “this is real this is me,” wrote one fan, referring to lyrics from the Camp Rock song “This Is Me” sung by his former co-star Demi Lovato. Another added that in his look, Jonas appeared remarkably like Broadway legend Patti Lupone. A third user wrote that Jonas might be coping with the Supreme Court’s ruling on the app’s future: “joe… blink twice if tik tok being banned is getting to you,” they wrote.
The video comes shortly after the Supreme Court released a decision on Friday morning (Jan. 17), upholding a federal statute effectively banning TikTok in the U.S. unless ByteDance — the company that owns the app — sells it to a U.S. business by Sunday. While TikTok has threatened to “shut down” the app in the U.S. on Sunday, President Joe Biden has made it clear that he will not enforce the ban on his way out of office, leaving the app’s future squarely in the hands of president-elect Donald Trump, who has recently pledged to keep the app available in the U.S.
