Jets to make a major decision on offensive play caller after brutal 2025 season

The first year of Aaron Glenn's tenure as the New York Jets head coach didn't go to plan. Not only did the defense not force a single interception, but the offense was incredibly lackluster.

The $40 million spent on Justin Fields didn't work out, and Garrett Wilson, despite missing the rest of the year since mid-October, ended as the leading receiver. Offensively, the team was very disappointing.

That's why the report from Connor Hughes of SNY isn't much of a surprise. Hughes is reporting that the Jets are making a change to their play caller in 2026, as the offense will have a new coach calling plays after a brutal 2025 season.

Jets plan to change play caller on offense after rough 2025

"Tanner Engstrand is not expected to. call plays in 2026, per sources," Hughes reports. "While the Jets are still determining his role, a new play caller is expected to be added to the staff."

This report from Hughes comes amid the news that the Jets have a serious interest in former Indianapolis Colts head coach and Super Bowl-winning offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, Frank Reich.

Offensively, the Jets were a mess in 2025. While Fields had a few nice moments, the overall body of work was far from ideal.

Tyrod Taylor wasn't much better, and when undrafted rookie free agent Brady Cook came in to close out the year, the offense was not good at all, as they were blown out in every game to finish the year.

With so many issues on the offensive side of the ball, including Breece Hall hitting free agency, the Jets' offensive coordinator (play caller) job is not a very appealing one.

Hughes' report indicates change is coming, which is welcome news after how brutal the 2025 season was for the Jets. But, with such a shaky situation, it wouldn't be a surprise if the new play callers weren't one of the top candidates this offseason.

The Jets are expected to change play callers, as Engstrand is not going to be in the same role, though he's not going to be fired. Glenn has some big shoes to fill after his first season, and there isn't an easy fix by any means.
