Jets reportedly open to trading No. 2 pick in NFL Draft for one reason

1 hour ago 4

The New York Jets own the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. While normally this is a good thing, meaning the Jets will get a great player, this year's class isn't as good as the Jets would've liked.

Fernando Mendoza is the only high-touted quarterback in this year's draft class, and Ty Simpson, the next best quarterback prospect, is not such a high pick. Arvell Reese and David Bailey are the top options for the Jets, but it's likely not ideal for the Jets.

That's why, when Tony Pauline of Essentially Sports is reporting that the Jets are interested in trading down from No. 2 overall, it's not a major surprise. But, there is one caveat for the Jets to move down the board: a very strong return.

Jets interested in trade-down from No. 2 overall

"There's recent talk that the New York Jets want to trade the second selection of the draft and move down," Pauline reports. "Sources tell me that, while the team will dangle the pick, it will take a big package of selections to get them to move from the draft's second choice."

If the Jets do decide to trade down from the second overall pick, it would likely coincide with a team getting very aggressive for one of the edge rushers between Reese and Bailey that they like.

But if there is a team willing to get so aggressive and trade into the second overall pick, then the Jets should be willing to listen to a trade offer.

While adding someone as good as Reese or Bailey would be nice, the Jets have so many needs across the roster that adding more capital couldn't hurt either.

Edge rusher, cornerback, safety, wide receiver, and quarterback are all major areas of need for this team. Defensive tackle, linebacker, interior offensive line, and even running back depth could all use some work as well.

The Jets have plenty of picks, so addressing these needs shouldn't be too hard. But if the Jets could swing a trade-down, add a few picks down the board, or better yet, add a 2027 pick, then it would be a worthwhile trade.

Such a deal is not likely, but this report from Pauline at least leaves the door open to such a big change at the top of the draft for the Jets.
