The New York Jets are picking at No. 2, 16, 33, and 44 in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft. With those selections, the Jets are likely to go for an edge rusher, a cornerback, and a wide receiver.
But the order in which they make those selections is unknown. However, for much of the offseason, the Jets have been tied to edge rushers at No. 2 overall. Ohio State's Arvell Reese and Texas Tech's David Bailey are the two edges often linked to the Jets.
Reese or Bailey looks to be the pick for the Jets at No. 2 overall. But, Eric Williams of Fox Sports made a prediction that the Jets will take an Ohio State defender, but not Reese, as they'd instead go safety Caleb Downs in a move that would "stun everyone."
Jets predicted to draft Caleb Downs at No. 2 overall
"Prediction: The Jets stun everyone and take Downs at No. 2," Williams predicts. "... Some NFL sources I spoke with consider (Jeremiyah) Love to be the best player in the draft, but that would be redundant for the Jets. The next safest pick? Downs. So, Caleb, welcome to New York."
If the Jets are ignoring positional value and strictly were tasked with taking the player that the majority of scouts and analysts believe in, while still being realistic for their franchise, Downs might be the pick.
The Ohio State safety is one of the best prospects in this year's draft class, and despite being a safety, he is sure to go very high in the draft. If he didn't go top-10, it would be a major surprise.

Selecting Downs with the second overall pick over the likes of Bailey and Reese would be a stunner. As good as Downs is, the upside case with Reese and Bailey at a premium position would be hard to pass up.
This prediction from Williams is highly unlikely to actually come true. Reese looks to be the favorite for the pick at No. 2 overall. While Aaron Glenn's defense needs help with interceptions, those options are better suited for down the board.
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, Dillon Thieneman, Colton Hood, Brandon Cisse, Chris Johnson, and other defensive backs like D'Angelo Ponds down the board are better uses of resources than taking Downs at No. 2.
The Jets taking Downs with the second overall pick would truly be stunning. After all of the buzz around Bailey and Reese, to predict the Jets go Downs instead is an incredibly bold prediction.
