Jets predicted to sign former $100 million wide receiver as Garrett Wilson running mate

Earlier this offseason, the New York Jets released quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his top target, wide receiver Davante Adams. And while they've already replace Rodgers with former first-round pick Justin Fields, their additions at wideout have been inadequate.

New York signed free agents Josh Reynolds and Tyler Johnson, who combined for 39 receptions, 485 yards and two touchdowns last year. They also selected Georgia wideout Arian Smith in the fourth round (No. 110 overall), who caught 68 passes for 1,356 yards and 10 touchdowns in 47 games over his five-year stint with the Bulldogs.

At this point in the offseason, there aren't any wide receivers still available that would make up for Adams' departure, but there are still some intriguing names on the market. Interestingly, ESPN's Matt Bowen identified the Jets as the best fit for veteran free agent Amari Cooper.

Cooper, 30, played his college ball at Alabama from 2012-14, earning All-SEC and All-American honors in his last season with the Crimson Tide before the Oakland Raiders took him in the first round (No. 4 overall) in the 2015 NFL draft.

Cooper made two Pro Bowls in his first two years with the Raiders before they shipped him to the Dallas Cowboys in middle of the 2018 season, which was his third Pro Bowl campaign.

After four seasons, the Cowboys traded Cooper to the Browns, and three years later, he was traded midway through 2024 to the Buffalo Bills. In 14 games this past season between Cleveland and Buffalo, the five-time Pro Bowler caught 44 passes for 547 yards and four touchdowns.

2024 was Cooper's worst statistical season of his career, setting career-lows in all three major statistical categories. There's a chance that he bounces back to the perennial 1,000-yard receiver he was before last season, but we also may have seen the beginning of the end.

For the money that Cooper will receive at this point in the offseason, it's at least worth a flyer to have another weapon for Fields to throw to other than Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, Breece Hall and rookie tight end Mason Taylor.
