Jets coach Aaron Glenn had praise for rookie quarterback Brady Cook after his first start on Sunday, but he is not ready to name him the starter for this week’s game against the Saints.
“When it moves forward as far as who’s going to be our quarterback, I’ll go ahead and say it now: I’m going to evaluate that and let you guys know that as this week progresses,” Glenn said.
Cook, an undrafted free agent out of Missouri, made his first career start in the 48-20 loss to the Jaguars. Cook threw three interceptions in the game, but also had some good moments. He completed his first six passes and led an impressive touchdown drive early in the game.
“I thought Brady did some really good things, especially the way he started the game,” Glenn said. “I think he was 6-for-6 and a touchdown, and then he made some rookie mistakes, like you would expect any rookie to make, and I see that he’s going to get better.”
Cook had to play because of injuries to Tyrod Taylor (groin) and Justin Fields (knee). Both players were inactive on Sunday. Glenn, speaking on Monday morning, said he would not know about their health until later on Monday. Even if those players are healthy, an argument could be made to play Cook to evaluate him. Glenn was asked about doing that regardless of the availability of Fields or Taylor.

Glenn also said he will know more about WR Garrett Wilson (knee) by Wednesday. Wilson has missed the last five games on injured reserve. Glenn was asked if we’ll see Wilson play again this season.
“Hopefully he does,” Glenn said. “I think we all hope that he plays this year, but I want to make sure that I give you guys a true answer when it comes to that.”

Glenn said he will ask the league for clarity on the penalty on Tre Brown for blocking out of bounds that wiped out an Isaiah Williams punt return for touchdown.
“That was a critical time in the game because I think it would have taken it to 21-14 at that time,” Glenn said. “Man, it was a hell of a return and, listen, there was hand fighting, you know, when they both were out of bounds. But I just think that was somewhat ticky-tack, and we will see exactly what they say when it comes to that. Just like most of those penalties, man, if it’s a penalty that I know that our guys made, listen, I don’t worry about those, but some of them I just really want to understand like how do I coach the player? You know, when the player asks me about this penalty, those are the ones I send in for the most part.”
The Jets placed safety Isaiah Oliver (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season. They signed DB Keidron Smith to take his roster spot.
