If the New York Jets aren’t comfortable with their backup quarterback options in the event Geno Smith becomes unavailable, they still have time to scour the free agent market and find a viable fit.
From Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox’s vantage point, a former Dallas Cowboys starting QB could intrigue the franchise during the next portion of the offseason.
“The New York Jets appear to be playing for 2027, a year in which they'll hold three first-round draft picks,” Knox wrote Saturday. “Therefore, adding a veteran quarterback to back up Geno Smith might not seem logical.
“However, the Jets have reportedly already offered a contract to Russell Wilson, indicating that they aren't happy with the idea of having Brady Cook, Bailey Zappe, and fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik as their QB understudies. Wilson, Cooper Rush, and Jimmy Garoppolo headline the remaining free-agent QB pool.”
After Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending hamstring injury during Week 10 of the 2024 season, Rush, who has previous starting experience with the Cowboys, assumed the No. 1 QB role for the final eight weeks of the year.
The Central Michigan product totaled 187 completions for 1,844 yards for 12 touchdowns and five interceptions to go along with a 4-4 record. Rush signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens this past season, but only appeared in four contests and failed to toss a touchdown.
Still, the 32-year-old has proven he can be a serviceable signal-caller when he’s called to step into action, which can’t be said about the QBs on the Jets’ roster not named Smith.
