The New York Jets' plans this offseason have been a mix of both preparing for the future and trying to win now to allow Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey to keep their jobs.
One of the more interesting positions the Jets have addressed is the quarterback spot. They traded Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs and traded for Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders. But there are likely a few more moves coming at QB, especially in the draft.
And according to Connor Hughes of SNY, the Jets reportedly hosted Penn State for a pre-draft workout to get a good look at some of the Penn State players. One of the more noteworthy prospects was 6-foot-5 QB Drew Allar, whom the Jets paid close attention to.
Jets get good pre-draft look at Penn State's Drew Allar
"The Jets had a number of Penn State players at the facility for pirvate workout this weekend, with the pro day circuit set to begin, per sources," Hughes reports. "QB Drew Allar was among them. Team decision makers watched him throw on Friday. The benefit of having him with a number of others: They could see him throw to his guys."
The Jets getting a good look at Allar during this private workout is very noteworthy. With the Jets looking to land a rookie quarterback, there's been plenty of buzz about Ty Simpson out of Alabama.
But, Allar, the Penn State quarterback with a big arm, is a new name strongly tied to the Jets after this report from Hughes.
Not only did the Jets make sure to get a good look at Allar, but they also got to see him throw to some familiar faces.
More: Jets traded for Geno Smith instead of signing him in free agency to avoid worst-case-scenario
The Jets getting a good look at Allar is smart, as the Penn State quarterback got hurt mid-season and only played in six games. He had 1,100 passing yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions.
In the past few years, he had 3,327 yards with 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2024, and 2,627 yards with 25 touchdowns and only two interceptions in 2023.
Allar's potential is there, but he needs to go to the right team and the right fit to work out in the NFL. And while the Jets might not be the perfect fit for Allar, letting him learn behind Smith, a Pro Bowl QB, for a year could help him transition to the NFL.
This report from Hughes suggests the Jets are eyeing Allar, who is likely a Round 3 or later pick. With the Jets looking for a developmental rookie quarterback, Allar, who needs time to develop and is still 22 years old, would make a ton of sense.
