Jets get positive Omar Cooper Jr. injury update amid ankle injury scare

The New York Jets beat the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 of the 2026 season, starting their year 1-0. While the offense wasn't anything overly impressive, it was a good start for Frank Reich's unit.

But one of the biggest concerns coming out of the week was the injury to Omar Cooper Jr. The first-round rookie receiver injured his ankle early in the game, and there's some real concern about his availability going forward.

However, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Jets got some positive news on Cooper's ankle injury. Instead of needing to place Cooper on IR, he has a chance to return within the next four weeks for the Jets.

"Jets rookie WR Omar Cooper Jr., who left the Week 1 game early, suffered an ankle sprain, and the MRI showed some positive news, sources say," Rapoport reports. "He's week-to-week, with the hope that he returns within the next four weeks."

This report from Rapoport is a big one. Cooper was feared to have sustained a serious ankle injury. Considering fellow AFC East WR A.J. Brown for the New England Patriots landed on injured reserve already with a high ankle sprain, Cooper's injury was a concern.

Those concerns have been somewhat quelled, as this report indicates Cooper might not hit IR this season and could come back within the next four weeks.

Instead of being forced to miss at least four weeks, Cooper has a chance to come back within the next few weeks, as his ankle injury seemingly isn't as serious as it was initially feared to be.

Cooper didn't have much of a chance to get going in Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season, but he still made a big play, catching his lone target for 30 yards.

While his exact return date isn't known just yet, this report is a sign he'll be back soon. Cooper, the Jets' first-round receiver, is going to miss some time. But it's not nearly as bad as it could've been.
