It's hard to be optimistic when your team went 3-14 last season. Things can turn around quickly in the NFL, but it will have to be a major turnaround to get the New York Jets to where they have to be by the end of this upcoming season.
But, head coach Aaron Glenn is on it. He also has a new quarterback this season in Geno Smith.
Of course, Smith isn't new. He's played at a range of franchises, most recently the Las Vegas Raiders. He's a veteran, and he's bringing years of experience to the Jets. Now, in what's good news for the signal-caller, CBS Sports has named Smith one of the biggest winners of the preseason. The news comes after the Jets' preseason win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday, in a 17-0 final score.
Geno Smith makes strong first impression
Smith looked darn good on Friday. He completed all seven of his throws on New York's opening drive. He also, as CBS Sports points out, "connected with both of the Jets' top wide receivers, Garrett Wilson (one catch on one target for 10 yards) and Adonai Mitchell (two catches on two targets for 29 yards), to finish the night with 65 yards passing."
These are encouraging signs. Of course, this is just the preseason, and what means something is when Smith takes the field for the Jets in September. But, a strong preseason showing is never a bad thing. Remember, he only had one year to prove himself with the Las Vegas Raiders, and he wasn't given the offensive tools that he needed to thrive. This could be a solid situation in New York, and that's a good thing for all involved.
