The New York Jets are amid a tricky quarterback controversy. Justin Fields, after brutal back-to-back weeks, is now at risk of seeing his starting job relinquished to backup veteran Tyrod Taylor.
Owner Woody Johnson has made his feelings clear, in that he wants the Jets to go with Taylor as the team's starter. But Aaron Glenn hasn't made any such decision on who will start in Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
But, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Jets were dealt a tough bit of news that could further complicate things. Taylor, who could make his first start over Fields this season, is now day-to-day with a knee injury.
Jets' Tyrod Taylor day-to-day with knee injury ahead of Week 8 vs Bengals
"Jets QB Tyrod Taylor, who had a chance to start Sunday vs. the Bengals," Schefter reports, "Is now considered day-to-day with a knee injury."

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 22, 2025If the Jets are without Taylor, then they'll have to continue with Fields as the starter. Amid all of the rumors that the Jets could bench Fields and the comments from Johnson, this would be an anticlimactic way for the team's starter to be decided for Week 8.
At 0-7, the Jets are looking for a win before they enter their Week 9 bye. But, with the Bengals looking up thanks to Joe Flacco, the Jets might have a tough time securing a win in Week 8.
And after all of the public trashing of Fields from Johnson, and speculation that Fields could be benched, having him be the starter in Week 8 would be an awkward spot to be in.
They've paid Fields $30 million guaranteed, but he has not lived up to the hype or expectations. While his Week 1 performance was encouraging, the Jets haven't seen nearly enough from Fields to make that $30 million guaranteed worth it.

In six games started this season, Fields has 845 passing yards and four touchdowns. He has no interceptions, but a reason for that is his inability to complete riskier passes, leading to the lackluster passing performances of the last two weeks.
Taylor has 379 passing yards and three touchdowns, and three interceptions in the three games he's entered. His lone start came against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns with one interception on 26 completions across 36 attempts.
New York has been eyeing a quarterback change, but this Taylor injury could force the Jets to stick with Fields for at least another week. Taylor is day-to-day and has a chance to play, but it's an injury worth monitoring, especially since Glenn and the Jets might decide on Taylor as the starter for this week if he can play.
