Jets activate 366-pound defensive monster ahead of 2026 season

The New York Jets are finally getting an opportunity to see one of their biggest offseason acquisitions on the practice field.

Defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat was activated from the active/non-football injury list Saturday, clearing the way for the 366-pound nose tackle to begin working with New York after a hamstring issue kept him sidelined for the opening portion of training camp.

Sweat arrived in New York through one of the Jets’ more notable offseason moves, with the team acquiring him from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for edge rusher Jermaine Johnson.

At 6-foot-4 and 366 pounds, Sweat gives the Jets a massive interior presence capable of occupying blockers and strengthening their run defense.

His return also adds another piece to a revamped defensive front featuring veterans Harrison Phillips, David Onyemata, Jowon Briggs, Will McDonald, Joseph Ossai and Kingsley Enagbare. First-round pick David Bailey is also expected to play a significant role.

Tennessee selected Sweat 38th overall in the 2024 NFL draft after his college career at Texas. Over two seasons with the Titans, he appeared in 29 games and started 28, recording 85 total tackles and three sacks.

His 2025 season was interrupted almost immediately.

Sweat suffered an ankle injury during Tennessee’s season opener against the Denver Broncos and was subsequently placed on injured reserve. He missed five games before returning to the lineup.

Now healthy enough to resume football activities, Sweat will begin the process of learning New York’s defensive system on the field while working his way into game condition.

The Jets don’t necessarily need Sweat to produce big sack numbers to make an impact. His value comes from controlling the interior, absorbing double-teams and creating opportunities for New York’s edge rushers and linebackers.

After spending the opening weeks of camp watching from the sideline, Sweat can finally begin showing why the Jets were willing to move a proven pass-rusher to acquire him.
