Jerry Jones’ shocking first comments since Micah Parsons requested trade off Cowboys

Jerry Jones was nonchalant on Saturday in his first comments since Micah Parsons’ bombshell trade request.

“I would say to our fans, don’t lose any sleep over this,” the Cowboys’ owner told reporters. “… We’re in good shape. This is negotiation.”

Jones, who gave his side of the story after Parsons dropped a long statement Friday asking to be traded and saying Jones hadn’t involved his agent in negotiations, said he isn’t considering moving the star defensive end.

Of the deal that was, apparently, discussed with Parsons (and not his representation) in March, Jones also said, “Micah took it off the table.”

It’s difficult to tell how the situation will be resolved given how unusual it is for things to play out in so public a manner with a contract dispute.

In Parsons’ telling, he and Jones met in March for a discussion about leadership that turned into a conversation about his upcoming extension. Parsons assumed it was not a formal negotiation and said he told Jones his agent would reach out. The Cowboys, evidently, assumed they had gotten a deal done directly with Parsons and did not want the agent involved.

“When my agent reached out and spoke to Adam [Prafiska, the Cowboys’ director of salary cap and player contracts], he was told the deal was pretty much already done,” Parsons wrote in his statement. My agent of course told him that wasn’t the case and also reached out to Stephen Jones. Again the team decided to go silent.

“At that point we decided we would allow the team to reach out to us whenever they decided they wanted to talk. Yet still not a call, email or text to my agent about starting a negotiation.”

The Cowboys can hold Parsons’ rights through 2028 via the franchise tag, but this is the last year of his rookie contract.

Parsons is at training camp but is going through a hold-in. Citing back tightness, he participated in the first practice, but that was it. He has reportedly not been receiving treatment, but has been in meetings, working out and attending practice.
