Jerry Jones issues firm response to critics of Cowboys' shocking Micah Parsons trade

The Dallas Cowboys are looking to get back in their glory years under the leadership of owner Jerry Jones. He has already stated that it is a priority for the franchise to get better and has made the moves for it to happen this offseason.

The message for the team is clear: they have to win the Super Bowl this season. Jones has talked about how he has liked letting go of one player last year.

Jerry Jones is satisfied with outcome of Micah Parsons trade

Jones recently talked about the outcome of the Micah Parsons trade during training camp in Oxnard, California. It has been nearly one year since the trade deal was completed, which shocked many fans at the time. Many Cowboys fans were angry to let such a talented star leave for the Green Bay Packers, as he was one of the best players for the team at the time. 

However, Jones expressed satisfaction and told reporters that he has no regrets over letting Parsons leave. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, he said, “Even though Micah's an outstanding talent [that] anybody would like to have, the bottom line is that I like what the result of the trade has ended up as I stand here today.”

He compared it to the franchise’s 1989 trade of running back Herschel Walker, which allowed them to win three Super Bowls in the 1990s. He said, “You could say those picks got us key players, but the main thing that the Herschel Walker trade did, it caused me to be more aggressive and caused us to, if you will, take more risk because we had more picks.”

He added that it eventually allowed them to take more risks and improve the team, “So, in a way, this actually created a mental part to us and to my role in it with me, to step out and make the moves and take, if you will, risks that are involved to be where we are today with a complete makeover of the defense.” Indeed, the Cowboys did use Parsons’ departure to strengthen their roster in different areas.

Jerry Jones used Micah Parsons trade for key offseason moves

The Cowboys traded Parsons on Aug. 28, 2025, to the Packers in exchange for defensive tackle Kenny Clark and first-round draft picks in 2026 and 2027. These picks have since been used to acquire All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams from the New York Jets and draft edge rusher Malachi Lawrence. 

The trade also allowed them to create significant salary-cap flexibility that turned out to be useful. It was helpful in signing safety Jalen Thompson, trading for pass rusher Rashan Gary, as well as giving Williams his recent three-year contract extension.

Jerry Jones is certainly happy and content with how things have turned out, though it remains to be seen whether it was worth it in the coming season.
